El Niño Costero or the Coastal Niño is a weather phenomenon that periodically affects South America, giving rise to extreme climate events. In 2017, it proved especially devastating for Peru, causing huge landslides and coastal and inland flooding that damaged property, homes and farming, bringing many local communities to their knees. In response to this catastrophe, our employees held a fundraiser within the Enel Group between March 28 and May 5 2017 to help finance the socially beneficial projects proposed by Caritas Peru. Created in 1955 by the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, Caritas Peru promotes and supports programmes to help the country’s poorest people and facilitate their development, based on the Christian principles of justice, solidarity and respect for human dignity. Amongst other things, the funds raised by Enel Cuore were successfully used for initiatives designed to improve the value chain of the main crops grown by families in the district of Callahuanca and the village of Barba Blanca, which were particularly hard it by the flooding. In the Callahuanca Gorge, in fact, Enel has a hydroelectric power station near the Santa Eulalia River.
