Dental care for children with disabilities in Milan, Italy

In Italy, children with disabilities who require specific dental care often face difficulties beyond the underlying pathology. These patients, defined as “uncooperative,” often receive treatment only through general anesthesia, an approach that has consequences for their psychophysical health and difficulties in resuming treatment. With the “Disabled Minor Dentistry” project, we want to improve the quality of life of these young people by providing them with a dedicated and highly specialized service. Farsi Prossimo Salute Cooperative is committed to meeting the health care needs of the most vulnerable people. Thanks to its experience in managing social and health services, it has transformed the Outpatient Clinic on Viale Jenner in Milan into a reference point for people with disabilities. The “Disabled Minor Dentistry” project was created precisely to offer young patients adequate care and to counter the worsening of dental diseases, which are often underestimated or considered marginal. The project, which we chose to support, involved the structuring of a specialized dental center within the Viale Jenner Outpatient Clinic, managed by Farsi Prossimo Salute. This center offers specific care for uncooperative patients, ensuring a medical approach that can prevent the use of general anesthesia. The goal is to provide timely and safe interventions, improving not only patients' oral health, but also their overall well-being and future physical and emotional development.
