The birth of a child should be a time of joy and serenity, but for some families it can turn into a painful ordeal when the newborn requires hospitalization in the Intensive Care Unit or Neonatal Pathology. Neonatal illness or prematurity, in fact, requires immediate care that often prevents return home and forces parents and children to live apart in the first days of life. In response to this need, the “Distacchi Dolorosi alla Nascita” (“Painful Detachments at Birth”) project was born, an initiative that offers emotional and practical support to 500 families during the most difficult times. The project is promoted by the Associazione di Promozione Sociale Il Melograno, which has been active in supporting families and parenting for years. With an approach based on empathy and specialized support, the association is committed to providing targeted accompaniment to families in difficulty, promoting well-being and resilience. “Distacchi Dolorosi alla Nascita” involved three hospitals in Rome - San Giovanni, San Pietro and Fatebenefratelli Hospitals - where families received assistance during the hospitalization of their babies. In addition, about 20 families were also followed after discharge with home-based interventions that facilitated the return home and the management of daily challenges. Thanks to our contribution, the project was able to provide targeted and timely support, improving the quality of life of the families involved. This project demonstrated how important it is to offer concrete help at the most critical moments in family life. Through collaboration between associations, hospitals and partners, it is possible to promote real and positive change for families facing difficult situations, turning pain into hope and strength.
