Loneliness is a reality that affects more and more elderly people, depriving them of meaningful relationships and putting their physical and mental well-being at risk. To raise awareness and promote concrete solutions, the second edition of the National Day Against Elderly Loneliness was held in Florence on November 15 and 16, 2019. The event, entitled “Nemica Solitudine” (“Enemy Loneliness”), was a moment of reflection and discussion among experts, institutions and citizens, with the aim of building a support network for the most vulnerable. The protagonist of the initiative was the Italian Association of Psychogeriatrics, which for years has been in the forefront of promoting mental health and well-being of the elderly. With a multidisciplinary approach, the association is dedicated to projects that improve the quality of life of older people, addressing complex issues such as social isolation and cognitive disorders. The “Enemy Loneliness” conference provided a unique opportunity to explore the phenomenon of loneliness in the elderly and identify effective strategies to counter it. During the two days, experts in the field shared research, experiences and best practices, promoting new synergies between entities working for the elderly. Thanks to our contribution, which supported the initiative with 25,000 euros, it was possible to create a valuable event, raising awareness among a wide audience on a crucial issue. “Enemy Loneliness” turned the spotlight on an often underestimated issue, helping to promote a culture more attentive to the well-being of the elderly.
