Hematologic diseases such as leukemias, lymphomas, and myeloma pose major challenges for patients and their families, not only clinically but also emotionally and logistically. Complex, often lengthy and debilitating therapies require not only constant medical support but also a caring environment that promotes psychological and physical well-being. It is essential to improve the quality of life for patients by offering them and their families concrete support, which can range from medical care to the creation of care facilities. One of these organizations is AIL Roma Vanessa Verdecchia OdV, part of the Italian Association against Leukemia Lymphoma and Myeloma (AIL), which stands out for its dedication to carrying out projects in support of hematology patients. AIL Roma Vanessa Verdecchia OdV is the Roman section of the Italian Association against Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma, founded in 1990 with the aim of promoting scientific research in the field of blood diseases and improving social and health care services. The project we are supporting, “Casa AIL - Residenza Oriana Daniello”, is an accommodation facility that meets a specific need: to offer free housing to hematology patients not resident in Rome, who represent about 30 percent of people with leukemia being treated at Roman health facilities. Many of these patients face long hospital stays and frequent travel to undergo treatment at specialized centers, such as the Tor Vergata Hematology Center, which leads to logistical difficulties and a significant economic and psychological impact. The project involves the renovation of a property of about 110 square meters, recently donated to AIL Rome by the mother of a young woman who died prematurely. The terraced house, located near the Tor Vergata Hematology Center, will be transformed into a residence capable of housing up to three patients, each with a caregiver, free of charge. The “Casa AIL - Residenza Oriana Daniello” project represents a fundamental step in AIL Rome's mission to improve the quality of life of patients suffering from leukemia and other hematological diseases. Offering free housing to patients not residing in Rome is a concrete response to a real need, which makes it possible to reduce the logistical and psychological difficulties related to treatment away from home, providing greater serenity to patients and their loved ones. The “Casa AIL” demonstrates how collaboration between institutions, associations and private individuals can make a difference in the lives of those facing a disease as complex as leukemia.
