For children with serious illnesses, spending the inpatient period in a cozy, well-maintained environment is crucial for psychological and physical well-being. A beautiful and stimulating space helps reduce care-related stress by creating a more reassuring atmosphere. For families, a welcoming environment facilitates emotional support and provides a place of comfort during difficult times. The opportunity for creative and recreational activities within the hospital setting helps children maintain a sense of normalcy and joy, aiding their recovery. The LAD Onlus Association, which created a home for children being treated at the Pediatric Oncology Unit of the University Polyclinic of Catania, knows this well. The house, built in 2016 also thanks to our support, is a multifunctional structure that follows the rules of bio-architecture and welcomes children both during the treatment phase and in the following periods, to accompany them towards a complete return to normality. With its 2,000 square meters and its large park, the facility offers: A psycho-social rehabilitation area, with personalized rehabilitation activities in collaboration with developmental neuropsychomotricists, physiatrists, physical therapists, speech therapists, and child neuropsychiatrists; a psycho-emotional/socio-educational area, with psychological support activities and workshops for emotional processing of trauma according to the Cure&Care method, which uses art to overcome the traumas of illness; temporary housing reception for children and their parents, to accommodate them outside the hospital facility in six mini-apartments. Involvement in a positive and stimulating environment plays a crucial role in the healing process, helping to restore serenity and strength to those facing such difficult challenges. This model of care demonstrates how important an integrated and humane approach to care is.
