Sick people and their families, in addition to facing health-related challenges, are often faced with the problem of getting to places of care. Living far from state-of-the-art clinics and hospitals can make treatment less accessible, especially for families with financial difficulties. Transportation costs, travel arrangements and the time it takes to travel are significant obstacles, adding further stress at an already delicate time. This situation can create a sense of isolation and injustice, making vulnerable people feel more distant from the care they need. For more than 50 years, AIL, the Italian Association against Leukemia-lymphoma and Myeloma, has been committed to assisting patients and families at all stages of the disease journey, to improve their quality of life: with this in mind, it is also important to ensure that patients and their caregivers can easily reach places of care. We have chosen to support the initiative Mobilità sociale AIL: verso eque opportunità di cura (AIL Social Mobility: toward equitable opportunities for care) precisely to ensure access to medical care and treatment for all those patients who have difficulty reaching the place of care and thus risk having to give it up. The intention is to support the costs of travel for these patients and their caregivers to reach a specialized treatment center best suited to respond to their clinical condition but located far from their place of residence. In 2022, with this initiative, AIL supported the expenses for more than 4,500 trips of about 1,000 patients, 105 family members and 20 marrow donors: now we want to increase the number of patients who will be able to benefit from the services offered, reaching about 1,200 hematology patients per year. AIL works in a strong network with its 83 sections, in collaboration with more than 100 hematology centers, to bring the solidarity mobility project to life, thanks in part to a shared travel management regulation. So that when it comes to getting the best care, no one is ever left behind.
