The Covid-19 outbreak has brought with it numerous consequences for the treatment of other diseases as well: in fact, to manage the emergency, many hospitals have converted entire sections of their facilities, with obvious repercussions for the prevention and treatment of many diseases, such as cancers. For example, the Columbus presidium of the Agostino Gemelli University Polyclinic was converted into a Covid-19 hospital, with the loss of the six operating rooms in the facility, including those used for the diagnosis and treatment of uterine cancers. It is clear, however, that necessary emergency management cannot mean the risk of neglecting serious diseases such as uterine cancers, which is why new operating rooms had to be built within the Polyclinic. In fact, the numbers speak for themselves: 8 out of 10 women perform at least one hysteroscopy in their lifetime for abnormal uterine bleeding or infertility. If a patient needs surgery, her journey can take up to 5 months, with three different visits to the hospital: one for diagnosis, one for pre-hospitalization, and one for the actual operation. With the Agostino Gemelli University Polyclinic Foundation, we are supporting the construction of an Integrated Center for Hysteroscopy and Three-Dimensional Ultrasound, with three operating rooms dedicated to the early diagnosis and treatment of uterine cancers: thanks to the new center, it is possible to carry out diagnosis, care and treatment activities that cannot be procrastinated, except by putting patients' health at risk. The goal is to treat patients through a single access to the hospital, through the practice of “See & Treat.” In this way, it is possible to manage in parallel the Covid-19 emergency and the regular course of health care services for women with cancer, with a reduction in waiting lists for endometrial cancer diagnosis, an increase in the number of cases treated, and the activation of dedicated clinical care pathways. To guarantee the right to care that leaves no one behind, even in emergencies.
