Mental health is an issue that concerns us all. Yet, for those living with mental distress, the path to social inclusion can still be fraught with obstacles, often compounded by economic hardship and lack of support. Since 1996, the Associazione Tutela Ammalati Psichici (ATAP) has been working to promote the social inclusion of people with mental distress and to offer concrete help to their families. How? By promoting cultural initiatives to raise awareness of mental health in the community, organizing art exhibitions, cineforums and theater performances in collaboration with local institutions. The heart of its activity is supporting patients and their families, accompanying them in dealing with paperwork, offering assistance in emergencies and ensuring constant help in their life journey. With the project we have chosen to support, ATAP wants to strengthen an essential service: the recovery from local farms and the distribution of fresh foodstuffs to the families of those assisted in socio-economic difficulties. So far, this activity has been made possible thanks to the availability of volunteers' private cars: now, the Association aims to purchase its own means of transportation and a refrigerator for storing fresh food, thus ensuring continuity and greater efficiency to the service. The importance of this project goes beyond simply distributing food: it is a concrete action that strengthens the sense of community and allows beneficiaries to feel welcomed and supported. Having a safe and guaranteed meal means having a solid foundation on which to build a path to recovery and autonomy.
