There are battles that no one should face alone. Among them, the fight against cancer requires not only effective therapies, but also welcoming environments and facilities that simplify the course of treatment. At Policlinico Umberto I in Rome, cancer patients face daily logistical difficulties that make their journey even more arduous, but together we can make a difference. Policlinico Umberto I is one of Italy's largest hospitals and a point of reference for teaching and research in the medical field, thanks to its collaboration with La Sapienza University of Rome. Among its many activities, oncology stands out, with two units recently unified organizationally. However, clinical and care services remain fragmented across six distant locations, creating significant inconvenience for patients and their caregivers. Therefore, we decided to support a key initiative: the creation of a single oncology clinical and care center within the Umberto I Polyclinic. This space, located on the second floor of Building No. 7 - Dermatology Clinic, will be entirely dedicated to the care and reception of oncology patients. This is a 1,400-square-meter area that, when renovated, will offer: a Day Hospital with 36 beds/chairs for infusion treatments; reception spaces for about 50 patients and companions; 12 outpatient clinics dedicated to specialist visits; a work area for physicians and residents, fostering the integration of care and research. The intervention will be developed in three batches: the first involves the renovation of the Day Hospital area, which has already been completed (work started on March 5, 2024 and successfully completed); the second involves the construction of the reception area; and the third involves the creation of the outpatient clinics and work spaces for physicians and residents, with an expected duration of five months. This project will radically improve the care experience for cancer patients by providing them with a welcoming and functional space, reducing the difficulties associated with moving between multiple facilities. Not only that, medical staff will be able to work more efficiently, with better integration between clinical activities and scientific research.
